All our Greenstones are constructed only of genuine Pounamu and they are hand carved in New Zealand by traditional artists. We do not sell commercially produced Canadian Jade pieces and we will happily certify your carvings as genuine if required.

Our Cut Gemstones are manufactured for the commercial jewellery trade and every piece we sell is a calibrated stone that will fit perfectly into a standard jewellery setting. We do not sell inferior commercial quality gems, all our faceted stones are graded VS or better and are fine to ideal cut gems. Our cabochon are high quality and beautifully cut and proportioned.We carry a range of standard calibrated gems in addition to what we have displayed in our store.

Our New Zealand Greenstone Carvings are genuine Greenstone. Greenstone traditionally called Pounamu is a variety of Nephrite Jade only found in New Zealand. With pounamu becoming increasingly harder to source, it is becoming imperative that you purchase your greenstone from a reliable and trusted source. Pounamu has been treasured and revered by the Maori for thousands of years; it has been used for the construction of tools, weapons, trade and as symbols of status and power. At Gems in the Rough, we have selected a small group of traditional greenstone hand carvers who only use New Zealand pounamu and you will feel safe in the knowledge that your talisman is guaranteed to be genuine pounamu and traditional in every aspect.
